Take Shape for Life
Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts:
Yes, you read it correctly and yet your doctors are constantly telling you to lose weight. So what do you do?
1. You must be honest and understand that there is no “pill” that treats obesity because obesity is not a “disease” even though there are though who want you to think so. Obesity is a lifestyle problem! Yes, a lifestyle problem. Like it or not, no one sat across from you at dinner time and held a gun to your head forcing you to prepare the foods you prepared or eat the quantity that you did. Once you understand that this is a behavior/lifestyle problem, then you can make decisions as to what to do and how to do it.
2. You must also understand that today’s foods are energy rich and nutritionally poor so it is very easy to consume more calories that you burn. This is a very simple problem: calories in = calories out. If you consume more calories than you use, you will gain weight.
3. Myths:
Diets help you loose weight:
False: diets are just that, diets… fads, temporary…. Don’t you know someone who was in a diet and as soon as they lost the weight and returned to their habits, they gained it all back. The only way to successfully lose weight and keep it off is to change your habits and no that doesn’t mean you can’t ever have pizza again (or what ever your food might be), it simply means that you will be more aware of what you are doing and take the necessary actions to maintain your healthy weight).
This shot (or pill) will do it by itself:
False: pills and potions don’t do anything except temporarily alter your chemistry. A friend of mine has said it best, “You can’t poison a crucial enzyme for the long term and expect good results.” (M. Brownstein M.D. author of “Drugs that Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do.)” This isn’t rocket science folks, this is why there are so many disclaimers on the ads…. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and it’s going to kill ya’ (death).
I will just work out until I get to where I want to be.
False: lets be honest, the vast majority of you have tried this and it didn’t work. Exercise is very important for over all health as it is in maintaining your ideal weight however; it is grossly ineffective at helping you lose weight.
4. What Can I Do?
Two simple questions:
1. Can you eat every 2-3 hours?
2. Are you coachable and teachable
