The Effects of Fast-Paced Cartoons

A few minutes of watching "SpongeBob SquarePants" appeared to have negative effects on executive function in 4-year-olds, researchers reported.

In a randomized controlled study, kids who watched the fast-paced cartoon about sea creatures for nine minutes did less well on tests of attention and cognition than those who spent the same amount of time drawing, according to Angeline Lillard, PhD, and Jennifer Peterson of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

They also did less well than children who watched a more realistic, slower-paced educational cartoon about a pre-school boy, Lillard and Peterson reported online in Pediatrics.

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: As a father of 5 children I can attest to the behavioral changes seen in my children when they are exposed to certain programming and I am sure that the vast majority of parents have too.

I believe that there is a simple answer. If you actually watch the program beforehand or with your child, you can make a decision as to whether the programming is “acceptable” or not. Don’t simply let the television (or video games) be a baby sitter. Even the baby sitter has influence on your children so why wouldn’t the programming they’re watching?

The Flu Shot or Vitamin D?

Avoid the Flu SHot, Take Vitamin Dl

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: While the CHC boasts the benefits of the flu shot, they are laughing all the way to the bank. The CDC’s 15-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) makes recommendations each year on who should be vaccinated.By the way, Almost all the ACIP members who make these recommendations have financial ties to the vaccine industry. The CDC therefore must grant each member a conflict-of-interest waiver.

This obvious conflict of interest and “fudged” statistics calls into question the motivation and efficacy of the flu vaccine. ‘

I assure you that you getting the flu has little to do with a lack of vaccine. You get the flu because your immune system is compromised. One of the easiest ways to increase the strength of your immune system id Vit. D.

There is a significant difference in having a “normal level” (Vit. D blood level) which can run from 30-100 however; when you look at functionality and not just static levels, you’re functionally deficient when you’re under 80.

Ask your physician for a Vitamin D3 blood test. If your physician doesn’t have an interest, then seek out someone like your chiropractor. In my office, a serum D3 is part of everyone’s lab work. If you’re in an area that has a company called “Any Lab Test” then stop in and request one and you can get one without a script for it. Still having problems, then contact us and we’ll help you find a solution.

Once you have determined what you’re levels are, then you can look at supplementation to build your levels back up.

More to come on Vit. D

The state of California has just passed bill AB499, which will permit minor children as young as 12 years old to be vaccinated with sexually transmitted disease vaccines like Gardasil without parental knowledge or parental consent. This means that if you  live in California, school or medical personnel would be allowed to vaccinate your child against an STD without your ever knowing it.

Dr. Pertryk’s Thoughts: Another day of Big Government sticking their nose into your personal business. Informed Consent is being circumvented and your rights (as well as your child’s rights) are being violated when a state, or the Federal Government decides that it can force you or your children to receive any vaccination.

So What Can You Do?

Whether you agree with vaccination or not, this issue affects each and everyone of us. It is not only your right, but your obligation to stop the government from forcing you to do something without your consent. This applies to our children as well since they are not considered to have reached the age of majority until 18 years of age.

Go to www.NVICAdvocacy.org and register today to take action.

For those of you who live in California, it is imperative that you take part in NVIC’s urgent action alert. If Governor Brown does not veto AB499, vaccine exemptions for sexually transmitted disease vaccines become NULL and VOID in California. Please take just 5 minutes to help support this cause by:

Forwarding NVIC’s Urgent Action Alert to everyone you know
Posting the link to this alert on Facebook, blogs, or other social media sites:

Obesity Grows In U.S.

CDC Animation of Obesity Trends: Obesity Trends In U.S.

No state in the U.S. has met the national Healthy People 2010 goal to lower its obesity prevalence to 15 percent over the past 10 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In fact, in every state, more than 20 percent of its adults were obese in 2010, according to the CDC. Obese is described as having a body mass index (BMI, a calculation of height and weight) over 30.

Data from the CDC show that 30 percent or more of adults in 12 states were obese in 2010. No states had that much of an obese population in 2000. Nine states did by 2009.

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: The proof is in the pudding.. literally. It is time that we take control of our mouths and stomachs. We can contain the sky rocketing costs of health care by eliminating the simplest and most expensive disease processes: High Blood Pressure and Diabetes.

Reducing your weight has demonstrated a direct correlation in the reduction of both high blood pressure and diabetes.

German researchers said in the current issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association that men with cardiovascular disease, also known as heart disease, and ED were twice as likely to die from all causes than men who did not have erectile dysfunction. And those with ED were 1.6 times more likely to suffer from a serious cardiovascular problem such as a heart attack or stroke.

Researchers have known for years that there is a link between erectile dysfunction and heart disease, said Dr. Sahil Parikh, an interventional cardiologist from University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland who was not involved in the study. "But now there is pretty clear evidence that there is a substantially increased risk of heart attack and death when patients have erectile dysfunction."

The results are probably not too surprising, added Dr. Robert Kloner, a cardiologist at USC’s Keck School of Medicine, "because arteries in the penis are smaller, so atherosclerosis shows up there sooner," perhaps three to four years before the onset of cardiovascular disease

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: Now here is where I will get into trouble…. Instead of trying to worry about where or when the next time might be, why not prepare yourself pro-actively so that there might be a next time.

Advertisers know how much our society is “sex driven” and they’re playing you like a fiddle. If you actually understood that ED may be a sign of an underlying pathology like a HEART ATTACK, I think you might be less interested in whether you are adequately sexed and more concerned about having a heart attack. I have heard people say that they’re dying for it… makes we wonder if they really are….

I laugh because each commercial even tells you what is wrong when they tell say “check with your doctor to be sure you can exercise or have sex before taking” this little pill and yet Big Pharma is making billions.

If you’re having this type of problem, check with your doctors and first assess your heart health. Take ED for what it can be, a sign of more significant problems and not a lack of sex.

There are many natural things to treat heart disease like certain vitamins and nutrients. These take some commitment as some will require a change in lifestyle to which many will  laugh and say, well I am going to die anyway, might as well be during that…  Sad to say people think that way.

There are also other fairly successful treatments like chelation therapy

Another Vaccine With Problems

Dr. Harper, a lead researcher for Gardasil,  told CBS News on August 19, 2009 that "young girls and their parents should receive more complete warnings before receiving the vaccine" and that a girl is more likely to die from an adverse reaction to Gardasil than from cervical cancer.

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: Time and time again, research has shown in the vast majority of cases, risks do not out weigh the benefits of vaccines.

There are numerous sources available on this topic however I will warn you, there are many opinions. It is a hotly contested issue as it broaches people’s philosophies, emotions and experiences not to mention the hordes of money put forth by Big Pharma.

More on vaccines to come.

Tinnitus (ringing on the ears) Solutions?

Brain Can Be Retrained To Stop The Ringing

In the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest several new approaches to treatment, including retraining the brain…

Dr. Petryk’s Thoughts: As functional neurologists, we have been evaluating and treating people with tinnitus by evaluating those areas of the brain that perceive and process sound.

A brief explanation of the condition: when those area of the brain that perceive and process sound(s) become unstable, there is spontaneous depolarization (nerve firing) and this results in the patient perceiving ringing in the ears.

There are differences between high and low pitch ringing and therefore there are differences in the way you would approach evaluation and treatment. Again, it is nearly impossible to create a “cookie cutter” therapy as each patient is completely different and has different tolerances and associated areas of brain dysfunction.

It is best to be evaluated by a Functional Neurologist who can properly asses the brain and develop treatments specific to your particular case.
